Indian Dance performance in Champaign Dec. 10

Odissi: Classical Dance of India

December 10, 7:00 pm at the Spurlock Museum at the University of Illinois Campus

From the calendar: "This performance is arranged and sponsored by Kalapriya Foundation (Pranita Jain, Artistic Director), co-sponsored by the Spurlock Museum, and supported in part by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency."

There's not much more information, or a pretty photo to share about this, so I can just give a link to the UIUC calendar entry. If you like Indian dance, it sounds like a good time!

...because they must need a little Christmas...

...The Tuvan band Alash will be joining BĂ©la Fleck & the Flecktones on a U.S. tour that includes Christmas carols with throat-singing elements. How about a Tuve rendition of "Jingle Bells"? After you hear "What Child is This?" performed with an interwoven Tuve throat-singing melody, you may never be able to listen to the traditional English carol the same way again (or "Greensleeves" for that matter...).

Find out more at World Music Central or check Alash's website for info about concert schedules. It looks like they'll be in Chicago December 12...if you go, and they take requests, ask them to sing "Baby It's Cold Outside" in Tuvan form for me!

Raquy & the Cavemen coming to Springfield Nov. 20

Raquy & the Cavemen will be coming back to Springfield again this year for a concert and drumming workshop at Karida's School of Orientale Dance on November 20. They gave a similar concert and workshop last year, focusing primarily on acoustic traditional instrumentals for the small studio space. The result was a very intimate performance, with a very up-close-and-personal setting between the artists and audience.

Watch the following video for a sample of their musical style:

Tickets for this type of concert sell out fast, though, so be sure to order quickly! For ordering and more information, visit Karida's online page about the show.

A Passage From India

At the risk of giving the impression that all my news comes from World Music Central, their RSS feed generally gives a lot of information about artists and performances all over the world. I try to filter the music and news that fits in The Eastern Hemisphere's genres, but if you would like more news than what I post here, I'd strongly encourage you to subscribe to their feed. They truly have a prolific website!

About Kailash Kher and Kailasa:

Kher, the Delhi-born son of a Hindu priest, has a voice that’s been rightly compared to that of deceased qawwali icon Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Despite growing up in a musical household where his gifts were evident early on, his first stab at employment was in the import/export business. The bottom quickly dropped out of that venture, so Kher made his way to Mumbai to give music a go.

It wasn’t long before he found success as a playback and jingle singer, but he was clearly cut out for better things. Teaming with musician brothers Naresh and Paresh Kamath (providers of guitar, bass, keyboards and vocals as well as knowing a thing or two about composing, producing and arranging), Kher took his vocal chops well beyond the worlds of Bollywood and advertising to create music that borrows from a range of Indian traditional styles and tosses in a good many sounds and instruments found elsewhere.

From the almost Celtic whirl of the opening “Kaise Main Kahoon” and the reggae-accented beats of “Dilruba” and “Turiya Turiya” to the low-key starkness of “Teri Deewani” and the pop-with-substance bounce that propels “Tauba Tauba” and “Rang Rang Ma,” Kher and Kailasa (Kher’s versatile backing band helmed by the Kamath brothers) have put together a defining album of modern Indian music.

Yatra is truly the work of the “Nomadic Souls” its title bespeaks, traveling regions of Rajasthani folk, Sufi devotion, Hindu allegories and urban dance floors that add up to a set of consistently compelling and charming songs. Recommended.

Throat Singing, Tango, Radif, Candombe and Other Music and Dance Traditions celebrated by UNESCO

From World Music Central:
The Tango of Argentina and Uruguay, The Radif of Iran, the Mongolian art of Khoomei singing, and the traditional Ainu dance of Japan are among the 76 elements inscribed on 30 September on UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Last week I got a request for both Mongolian Khoomei and Ainu music...I'll have to see if I can track down a CD of Ainu. Listen for some Mongolian Tuve music this week after 8pm CST!

Corsican Cantu in paghjella Declared Intangible Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding

From World Music Central:

The UNESCO Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Heritage, chaired by Awadh Ali Saleh Al Musabi (United Arab Emirates), identified The Cantu in paghjella of Corsica an intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding during its recent 2009 session in Abu Dhabi.

The paghjella is a male Corsican singing tradition. It combines three vocal registers that always enter the song in the same order: segonda, which begins, give the pitch and carries the main melody; bassu, which follows, accompanies and supports it, and finally terza, the highest placed, which enriches the song. Paghjella makes substantial use of echo and is sung a capella in a variety of languages including Corsican, Sardinian, Latin and Greek.

Happy Chinese Moon Festival!

Usually around the end of September and the beginning of October is when the Chinese celebrate their annual Moon Festival, when farmers end their summer harvesting and people in general admire the mid-autumn harvest moon. (Wikipedia)

And, of course, this holiday is especially marked by eating traditional tasty moon cakes!

Each cake is an individual portion. They look small, but they're solid blocks of nuts and honey with a little bit of flour -- so one cake eats like a meal! Mmm, I could certainly go for a moon cake this year. I'll have to check the Asian grocery stores later today...yummmm!

This year, the moon festival falls on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Attend the Oct. 2 presentation about the Moon Festival by the University of Illinois Asian American Cultural Center. They're serving moon cakes!

Move over, Stradivarius!

In a recent MSNBC article, two violins infested with white fungi, which have rendered the delicate wood of the instruments soft and squishy, brought in more money at an auction than the classic Stradivarius.

Apparently the partially-decomposed wood has really good acoustic properties.

Meet Hanggai

If you will be in New York tomorrow (September 18), you might check out Hanggai, a Mongolian folk group that will be performing at the Peter Norton Symphony Space. Hanggai's characteristic sound is referred to as Chinagrass, a mix of contemporary Chinese folk music of the grasslands with rock instruments.

Khoomei -- aka "throat singing", when one person sings two notes simultaneously -- along with horsehair fiddle (morin khuur) and a two-string lute (tobshuur) are traditional elements of the music from this part of the world. Combined with punk-inspired electric guitar, this blend is sure to make for a unique concert-going experience.

World Music Festival in Chicago in September

If you can make it to the Chicago area September 20-24, this looks like a good time in Millennium Park. They're going to have 6 concerts, bringing in big names in world music.

Go to World Music Central for more the lineup and info.

Czech Folk Rock Video: Cansikou - Borrega

As best I can tell, this claymation music video by Cansikou is about sheep, rugby, and intriguingly hypnotic wavy lines. Is this provincial shepherd succumbing to the allure of violent Maori tackle sports? How do his sheep feel about it?

Hooray for Czech folk rock!

Promising-looking new albums

Keep in mind I haven't listened to either of these, but have seen them announced through World Music Central. Click on the album titles for more info.

Dalai Lama Lattes

Another MSNBC post... a coffee shop in Taiwan will draw a picture of the Dalai Lama in foam on top of your latte. Keith Olbermann on Oddball: "That looks more like Dilbert, not the Dalai Lama."

Obama: "Happy Ramadan"

From MSNBC:

Obama hosts dinner for Islamic holy month

President praises American Muslims for contributions to culture, country

(Photo from MSNBC)

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32652126/ns/politics-white_house/

It's definitely been refreshing to see Obama honor the traditions of other religions (besides Christianity, which has always been honored by US presidents) since he's been in the White House. For those who are celebrating Ramadan, many happy blessings to you! (And to those of you who are not, as well!)

Cairo's Slums Go Solar

As reported by National Geographic. It makes a lot of sense--it also makes me wonder why no one thought of doing this sooner.

Rachel Bryce in Slovenia - Jazz Fusion

A bellydance/jazz fusion piece by Rachel Bryce. Oddly enough, I was listening to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy the other day and thought it would be interesting to create a bellydance choreography for Minnie the Moocher. There's no topping Rachel Bryce, however. It's always a treat to see her perform!

New Music

Mara Aranda & Solatge: Unearthing the Roots of Ancient Aragon

From World Music Central:

Spanish singer Mara Aranda has been involved in some essential world music projects based in Spain's eastern Mediterranean coast. She was a member of famed band L'Ham de Foc (Mediterranean world music) and Aman Aman (Sephardic). She is back with a new recording that focuses on the music of the ancient kingdom of Aragon. Before Spain became a unified nation, several Christian and Muslim kingdoms existed in the Iberian Peninsula. The kingdom of Araon in eastern Spian included the current autonomous communities of Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. The languages spoken in ancient Aragon were derived from Latin and included Castilian (what we currently know as Spanish), Aranese, Catalan and Valencian.

Gifted with a prodigious and powerful voice, Aranda has compiled traditional folk songs from the various regions and gave them new life, with contemporary folk music arragements. The repertory includes Romances (ballads), cantos de trabajo (work songs), melodĂas de baile de bastones (melodies of cane dances), boleros, bailes de cabezudos (dances of large headed carnival figures), fandangos, and Aranese aubadas. Anna Schaad: Mesmerizing Fiddle Dreams

From World Music Central:

Virtuoso fiddler Anna Schaad embraces the charm and beauty of electronic music on her latest CD, Dream Within a Dream. Schaad uses a combination of acoustic and electric violins and viola. Her research into electronic music forms has her using drum loops, field recordings, samples, MIDI-generated instruments. She is joined by Canadian musician Lauri Lyster on global percussion, Doug Rehfeldt on electric bass, Matt Rehfeldt on cello, David McVittie on flute and harmonium, Hill Hudson on beat boxing, Hadley Frazier on vocals and Gail Smedley on zills.

While most of the pieces have a Celtic and world music influence in the melodies and percussion, the overall sound has a mesmerizing ambient sound that makes the music trance-like. This is topped by Schaad's sultry phrasings on the various fiddles which are extraordinarily beautiful.

Free Oumou Sangare Concert in Chicago - July 2

If you can make it to Chicago this Thursday (July 2, 2009), be sure to check out the free concert by Oumou Sangare, one of the biggest names to come out of Mali's music scene. The concert is part of a Music Without Borders project, and you can find more information about the concert and the artist at World Music Central.

I've played a few of Sangare's songs on my show in the past. Her style blends traditional West African sounds with a contemporary social message. If I didn't already have a prior commitment tomorrow night, I'd love to see her live!

On another note, I'd like to recommend World Music Central as an excellent resource for anyone looking for more information about world music. Their site features regular updates about upcoming concerts and artists around the world. My one criticism would be that they don't always clarify the location of some of their concert announcements (it's at ___ Hall. If you don't recognize it, you probably don't live near it anyway, right?) but the news about new artists and albums is always interesting. I don't want to copy their content too extensively but I might post a link once in a while for information relevant to the genres I play and/or events near Illinois (my local broadcast zone).

Amadou Bagakoyo Interview via AV Club

The AV Club recently published an interview with Amadou Bagakoyo, of Amadou & Mariam. (This photo is taken from the page with the interview, which you can find here.)

If you are not familiar with Amadou & Mariam, they are a Malian musical husband-and-wife team whose blend of West African rhythmns and Western blues is definitely worth listening to. I've played a couple tracks off their album Dimanche a Bamako; still need to get Welcome to Mali sometime to broadcast.

I'm sure Michelle Obama could do anything she puts her mind to...seriously, only she could make someone like Carla Bruni look like an underdog by comparison. And I root for underdogs! Go Carla!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!)

<35,000-year-old bone flute

From MSNBC Cosmic Log: Scientists have recently discovered a bone flute in a cave in Southwestern Germany, along with the oldest-known carving of a human figure (Venus, naturally).

The study is being used to support a theory that musical culture contributed to early humans' survival over Neanderthals. The article (from which this photo was taken) also includes a short Quicktime mp3 clip of music played on a reconstruction of this flute: Music for Cavemen

As a result I was paying more attention to one project and less to this one. Next week's show should be back up to its customary game, heavens willing!

How does your instrument grow?

According to a recent National Geographic article, ecologists are gaining leverage in their attempts to save the African mpingo--or blackwood tree, which is used to make woodwind instruments like clarinets, oboes, and bagpipes.

Over-harvesting has made the tree extinct in Kenya and northern Tanzania. Eco-certified mpingo, on the other hand, is becoming a more popular alternative that also benefits local villagers more than "well-connected outside loggers".

Expressions of African Art (CNN video)

This CNN video is primarily about visual art created by African artists, on display at the Fowler Museum at UCLA. The footage of giant veils along the geological rift that split Africa from South America is enchanting, though my favorites might be the Africanized Arabic alphabet characters and the rippling sculpture of liquor bottle labels.

Experimenting with Blogger

For the past 2 1/2 years I've been using MySpace to network my world music radio program, The Eastern Hemisphere. Since fewer people are using that site these days, I'm trying out other options for getting the word out about my show. Check this blog for weekly playlists with the names of artists, songs, and albums (unless I don't have that info) listed chronologically in case you want to learn more about something you hear. There might be other updates of interest to bellydancers and world music fans, too. As stated, this is an experiment. We'll see how it goes.

You can also find me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/amckinn

And on FriendFeed: http://friendfeed.com/amckinn

And, of course, the ubiquitous Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=197001767&ref=name

Only this blog will be 100% dedicated to The Eastern Hemisphere radio, however. Stay tuned!
